World Cancer Research Day: Supporting Cancer Research through Authenticated Cell Line Models

On 24 September, World Cancer Research Day shines a spotlight on the scientists, clinicians and organisations working together to improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. It is a reminder that every breakthrough, from earlier diagnosis to more effective treatments, begins with research and collaboration.

At ECACC, we are proud to support the global cancer research community by providing access to high-quality, authenticated cancer cell lines that help drive discovery and innovation. These models play a vital role in understanding cancer biology, identifying new biomarkers, evaluating potential therapies and advancing precision medicine.

Cancer remains one of the world's most significant health challenges, requiring a coordinated effort across disciplines, institutions and countries. World Cancer Research Day recognises the importance of working together to accelerate progress and deliver better outcomes for patients. Researchers rely on robust, reproducible tools to achieve these goals, making the quality and provenance of research materials more important than ever.

ECACC supports this work through a collection of more than 500 cancer cell lines spanning a wide range of tumour types, including breast, colorectal, lung, oesophageal, pancreatic and ovarian cancers, as well as leukaemia, lymphoma and sarcoma models. Each cell line undergoes rigorous quality control, including authentication and microbial testing, giving researchers confidence in the reliability of their experimental data.

From well-established models such as A549, MDA-MB-231 and PANC-1 to specialised and emerging cell lines supporting research into rare and difficult-to-treat cancers, ECACC's portfolio helps scientists explore disease mechanisms, investigate drug responses and bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical application.

This World Cancer Research Day, we celebrate the dedication of researchers around the world and recognise the essential role that trusted research tools play in scientific progress. By providing authenticated cancer cell lines and expert support, ECACC is committed to enabling high-quality research that contributes to the shared goal of improving cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment for patients everywhere.
