A Quarter Century of NCPV: From Origins to Impact
In 2025, the National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) marked 25 years as a trusted resource for global virology research and outbreak preparedness. Since its establishment in 2000, NCPV has grown into an internationally recognised collection, now managed by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Today, NCPV holds more than 340 high-quality human pathogenic viruses and animal viruses of veterinary importance, classified under ACDP hazard groups 2 and 3 and SAPO 2 and 3. These resources have played a vital role in major public health responses, including the Zika virus outbreak (2015–2016), the COVID-19 pandemic, and more recently, UKHSA’s work on Mpox and Chikungunya virus prevention.
To celebrate this milestone, explore the NCPV timeline highlighting the key achievements from the past 25 years.
Looking ahead, NCPV aims to expand its diversity by incorporating underrepresented virus families and strengthening its global role in outbreak preparedness. As viral threats continue to emerge, NCPV remains committed to supporting scientific research.
