Jane Burton

Jane has over 30 years’ experience of working with high consequence pathogens. After completing her PhD on improved detection methods for Bacillus anthracis in environmental samples, Jane developed molecular methods for the detection of haemorrhagic fever viruses, supporting the Rare and Imported Pathogens LaboratoryJane then worked for 8 years in High Containment Microbiology growing and characterising Hazard Group 4 viruses before joining NCPV in 2021. Recent global disease outbreaks of disease caused by new and re-emerging viruses have emphasised the value of the NCPV for disease preparedness. Jane’s role is to ensure that NCPV remains useful and relevant.

Personal Refection

Working in NCPV is fascinating.  It is a privilege to work with such a wide range of viruses - though not without its challenges. As we start the next 25 years, I would like to encourage the next generation of virologists to deposit with us to help keep the collection contemporary
