NCPV Webinar: 25 years supporting scientific research
The National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) is celebrating 25 years supporting scientific research. Established in 2000, the collection has grown over the last quarter of a century into an internationally recognised resource, playing a pivotal role in virology research and global outbreak preparedness.
Join NCPV on 16 October from 1pm to 2pm for a lunchtime webinar celebrating NCPV’s history and impact over the last 25 years.
Date: 16 October 2025

Presentation summaries
An introduction to NCPV
This session provided an overview of the origin, development, and remit of the NCPV to support current virology research and as a resource to improve preparedness against future virus outbreaks.
NCPV technical aspects
This session will explore how the NCPV preserves a diverse range of fully authenticated pathogenic viruses for research, diagnostic, and vaccine development purposes. Key topics include quality control measures and strain characterisation techniques.
Emerging viral diseases: Making the leap from neglected to notorious
This talk explores how obscure viruses can transform into public health emergencies of international concern. We'll examine the viruses that have emerged from scientific obscurity over the past 25 years - including many former 'neglected tropical diseases' - uncover the key factors that drive these dramatic shifts from textbook footnotes to front-page headlines and identify which overlooked pathogens may be poised to become tomorrow's global health emergencies.
