NCTC bacterial strain notification – 2022
Founded in 1920, NCTC is the longest-established collection of its type anywhere in the world. NCTC specialises in preserving and distributing strains of medical, clinical, and veterinary importance, and organisms deposited within NCTC are maintained by experienced staff, supported by experts in the UK Health Security Agency’s specialist and reference laboratories.
In 2022, one hundred and twenty-five bacterial strains were added to the collection and were made available via the NCTC online catalogue. These included:
-
27 strains obtained from legacy archive and historical collections (including 15 known to be from the pre-antibiotic era)
-
18 type strains of novel taxa
-
15 strains of human clinical significance and seven of veterinary provenance
-
12 antimicrobial resistant strains (including one previously described type strain; NCTC 14468)
-
9 strains that carry linear plasmids (an atypical trait)
-
7 previously described type strains (including one antimicrobial resistant strain; NCTC 14468)
-
2 laboratory reference strains
A comprehensive summary of the strains, their provenance, and significance has been published in Access Microbiology: Notification of bacterial strains made available by the United Kingdom National Collection of Type Cultures in 2022.
We are constantly striving to improve the range of strains available from NCTC to better reflect the needs of current life science research. New strains are continuously added to the NCTC collection and can be found on the new bacterial strains page of the website, and we actively encourage scientists and researchers from academic and commercial organisations to deposit with us.
Culture Collections staff are here to ensure that the deposit of strains into our collection is straight-forward and well supported. Please contact us if you have any further questions.
The National Collection of Type Cultures wishes to thank its globally distributed network of depositors for their support of the collection and for sharing strains that are of value to the scientific community
