NCPV’s unique role in global health research

The National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) stands out as a distinctive resource in the global scientific community, as highlighted in this 25-year anniversary infographic. Established in 2000, NCPV has grown to house over 340 authenticated pathogenic viruses, spanning 19 unique families and including 22 new additions since 2023. This diverse collection, which supports both human and animal health research, features a mix of historic outbreak strains, and recently circulating viruses. Over the past 25 years, NCPV has grown into an internationally recognised collection which supports scientific and academic research in the UK and abroad, as well as supporting national and international outbreak and emerging threat response, for example Oropouche and Chikungunya in 2024-2025, making it an indispensable asset for virology research.
