New Antimicrobial Resistance Reference Strains brochure now available

Colindale Lab

A revised edition of the National Collection of Type Cultures' Antimicrobial Resistant Reference strains is now available online.

Revisions include updates to reflect the latest recommendations from the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST), the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and Public Health England, as well as the inclusion of strains with known intrinsic resistance determinants and the addition of strains accessioned in recent years.

Among these new additions are strains resistant to “last-resort” antibiotics such as colistin and linezolid and a strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae with combined ceftriaxone and high-level azithromycin resistance, alongside the more “classical” antibiotic resistant bacteria such as diverse lineages of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin resistant enterococci.

The curation of antimicrobial resistant strains by the NCTC is supported by the expertise of Public Health England’s Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infections laboratory (such as the accession NCTC 14320 – 14339; a carbapenem resistant panel of Enterobacteriaceae) and a range of international depositors and researchers which helps to ensure both well-known and emerging resistant phenotypes are available from the NCTC. Representative strains of contemporary lineages of both globally disseminated (such as Streptococcus epidermidis NCTC 14218 - 14220) and domestic hospital adapted (such as Enterococcus faecalis NCTC 13779 – 13780) are also included.

These strains are suitable for a wide range of applications, such as phenotypic testing or molecular assay. Like all NCTC strains, they are provided as live infectious bacteria preserved by freeze drying, and are also available as bespoke DNA extracts
